About Us
We publish a free, modern browser version of Hangman — the classic word-guessing game — with ten categories, a limited letter hint, a streak to chase, and a layout that works on any screen.
Our craft
One word. Twenty-six letters.
Read the category, spend your safe guesses well, and land the word before the drawing is done. That loop is everything we design around.

What we make
hangmangame.app is the site behind our version of Hangman. The product is a single-player word game: a hidden word shown as blanks with a category, guessed one letter at a time, with six wrong guesses before the drawing is complete.
We are not an app-store publisher and there is nothing to download. The game is the website. That keeps load times short, works on phones and desktops alike, and avoids an account wall. Win rate, best score, fastest solve, and streak live in local browser storage on your device.
If you are comparing this to another word-game site, this page only speaks for hangmangame.app. The rules and scoring described in our how-to-play guide and FAQ match this exact build.
Our story
Hangman has one of the longest histories of any game people still play daily. We treat that as a responsibility to get the rules exactly right and the friction as close to zero as we can.
Hangman is a paper-and-pencil word game with roots in nineteenth-century Britain. A close relative appears as "Birds, Beasts and Fishes" in Alice Bertha Gomme’s 1894 collection of traditional games, and the gallows-drawing version was well established in print by the early twentieth century.
Through the twentieth century Hangman became a fixture of language classrooms and long car journeys — a game that needs nothing but a scrap of paper and teaches spelling, vocabulary, and letter frequency without feeling like a lesson. Its structure also underpins broadcast word games; "Wheel of Fortune" is Hangman with a wheel.
hangmangame.app is an independent, modern implementation of that same game. The rules are unchanged; what is new is a rendering that is smooth on a phone, a full-width on-screen keyboard, ten curated categories, a limited letter hint, a streak counter, synthesized sound with a real mute, and progress that stays on your device.
What we stand for
Open the page and a word is already waiting. No account wall, no download, no splash video — pick a category and start guessing.
Six wrong guesses, two hints, ten categories, standard letter-by-letter rules. Nothing is gated behind a "pro" toggle and nothing nags you to install an app.
Win rate, best score, fastest solve, and longest streak live on your device. We do not hold your record hostage behind a login, because there is no login.
The whole game is free forever. No energy meters, no interstitial video ads between words, no surprise paywall on the hint button.
Who it is for
hangmangame.app is a family-friendly, single-player game with no chat and no store. A poor fit if you want multiplayer or live events; a good fit if you want the real game of Hangman, exactly as you remember it, on whatever screen is nearby.
A word takes thirty seconds to two minutes. Hangman is built for a phone on the couch or a browser tab between tasks, not a long campaign.
There is no clock forcing a move and nothing to react to. The whole challenge is which letters you try and in what order.
Your record stays on the device you played on. That is a deliberate trade: instant play and real privacy, with no cloud restore.
Why this site
Hangman has thousands of implementations online. This one exists to ship a single honest, fast version — correct rules, useful categories, and no clutter.
Ten curated lists — Animals, Countries, Food, Sports, Science, Music, Nature, Around the House, Jobs, Travel — plus "Surprise me". The category shows above the blanks so it is a real clue, not decoration.
Two letter hints for a genuine stall, a keyboard that locks used letters so you never repeat one, and instant restart with no page reload.
No auto-playing video, no fake "download our app" banners, no dark patterns around the settings. The how-to-play guide and FAQ describe this exact game, not a generic write-up.
How we build
The game runs entirely on the web: fast loads, type / tap / keyboard controls, and progress that stays local unless you clear your browser data. We use lightweight analytics to see what helps players — never to gate the game behind a profile. The game on the home page is the one described on our rules pages, so search results and the live game never drift apart.
Phone, tablet, and desktop share one board. Type letters on a keyboard, tap the on-screen keys on a touchscreen, or use H for a hint and N for a new word.
Win rate, best score, fastest solve, and streak are stored locally. You own the continuity of your record without signing up.
We watch aggregate usage through Google Analytics to improve pacing and polish. Details are in our Privacy Policy — never as a sales pitch.
